FEMA Update

Place: San Mateo City Council Chambers
Date: October 16, 2008
Time: 7:30PM (tenetative)

North Shoreview Neighborhood Association has sponsored a community meeting hosted by the San Mateo United Homeowners Association to cover FEMA Flood Insurance issues. We have invited representatives from Congressional and State representatives, and city and county officials to explain the latest FEMA initiatives affecting North Shoreview and other neighborhoods which are covered in the current and future Flood Insurance Rate Map. Please encourage as many neighbors to attend to show our level of concern about the costly and burdensome flood insurance issue.

State Representative Jackie Speier has been working in our behalf to mitigate FEMA's latest mandate to increase our flood insurance policy rates. FEMA has steadfastly refused to honor its previous commitment to maintain the rates it promised in 2001. Congresswoman Speier is now suggesting a transitional schedule to help us adjust gradually to the new rates. Here is her latest news.

Contact FEMA

Many neighborhoods recently received letters from the city of San Mateo advising us our "grandfathered" status re. flood insurance was going to be revised, resulting in much higher rates for all.

We've contacted Congresswoman Jackie Speier, whose office is working with the city and is also questioning FEMA as to why our status is changing when we were promised otherwise back in 2001. We are also in the midst of contacting Senators Feinstein and Boxer about the situation. And we are contacting our state representative, Leland Yee, to request he pursue state funds available for projects that, when complete, will remove us from FEMA's flood map.

It would be very helpful and persuasive if you would send letters to your elected officials informing them of your displeasure with this situation. To make it easy to send the letters, these template letters have been drafted for your use.

You are encouraged to make these letters your own, edit them to reflect your situation, and send them to our elected officials ASAP. In fact, it is more helpful if you include facts about your own situation.
